Second American edition (following the first of 1792, and the true London first of 1765) of this landmark work of early British cookery. Not much is known about Carter herself, but her emphasis on a variety of tasty, accessible gravies and sauces has stood the test of time. Although in its initial U.S. appearances, the Frugal Housewife was strictly oriented towards British cuisine and ingredients, it was later adapted and expanded for American housewives, and portions of the original publication directly formed the basis for the first American-authored cookbook: Amelia Simmons's American Cookery.

Uncommon first edition of this popular and oft-reprinted manual of cookery and
household management, aimed squarely at the middle class. The introduction encourages
kindness towards domestic servants; meanwhile, one of the earliest “counsels” for those young
women concerned about the responsibilities of their new lives is that “Good housekeeping [is]
compatible with intellectual culture” (p. 7). The very American — or more specifically, very
New England — recipes include fish chowder, Norwich loaf cake, Litchfield crackers, New
Haven sugar gingerbread, Salem plum pudding, etc.The endpapers bear several additional recipes pencilled in an early hand, including a
“Cure for Felon.”
American Imprints 46-1830; Bitting 100; Brown, Culinary
Americana, 1491 (1860 ed.); Cagle & Stafford 187; Lowenstein 399.
Publisher's quarter brown cloth and printed light green paper–covered sides; edges rubbed, sides
lightly stained. Endpapers as above; title-page with early pencilled annotation in upper portion;
foxing and staining, but no tears or tattering. In fact a good copy, the more interesting as
showing it was used. (26685)

Craig, John C., ed. The recipe book of
Lillie Hitchcock Coit. Introduction by Carol Hart Field. Berkeley, CA: The Friends of the Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley, 1998. 8vo. [2 (blank)], frontis., 5–65, [5 (3 blank)] pp.
$20.00
Number 44 in the Keepsakes series issued for its members by the Friends of the Bancroft Library. One of eighteen hundred copies in this edition. The original manuscript recipe book of Lillie Hitchcock Coit—whose life is recreated by Carol Hart Field in the introduction—was acquired by The Bancroft Library in 1995, and is here edited by John C. Craig and transcribed by Barbara Hoddy.
The recipes collected by Mrs. Coit reflect the “cosmopolitan character of San Francisco” during the 1870's and 1880's and show “the influence of the French, Spanish, Mexican, and English traditions in the cookery of the period.”
Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and one additional illustration.

Scarce recipe book printed in Norway, in Danish, possibly with
some Norwegian words used. Although Danish is regrettably not one of the languages
at our command, the book seems to begin with a large number of puddings, sweets,
and desserts before moving on to a range of other dishes—a few of which are
identified by French titles. The 812 indexed recipes are printed in fraktur,
in paragraph form, and include such delicacies as Hvedebrødbudding, Grilleret
Tunge, and Hummer-Rouletter.

Lovely, very giftable cookbook originally intended for the novice homemaker expected to provide “dainty, appetizing, and prettily served” meals for her new husband. The volume, designed with a thumb index for ease of use, features a color-printed affixed front cover illustration and matching frontispiece depicting an elegant Edwardian bride, as well as attractive, period-evocative color-printed illustrations dividing the internal sections. Several pages are provided for “contributed recipes,” unused here. The author proudly describes this work as
both “wondrously dainty” and “entirely practical” (p. 5).
Bitting 114; Brown, Culinary Americana, 770. Publisher's mauve cloth, front cover framed in gilt with gilt-stamped “wedding bell” corner decorations and with affixed chromolithographed illustration, spine with gilt-stamped title; corners and spine extremities lightly rubbed, back cover with small area of discoloration. Some corners creased; four pages with spots of staining. One leaf with short tear from upper margin, touching header without loss.
We suspect that this was cooked from, but very carefully; and we like it that one spotted page offers the recipe for “Kisses.” (26616)
