Binding: Harding’s
binding style 17½: Publisher's brown morocco with large working clasp.
That's the clasp (and its shadow) that you
can see at the right of the book, in our image of the leaf presenting the Adoration
of the Magi,
above not some odd-appearing flaw! Covers
elaborately gilt-stamped with frames consisting of fillets, foliation, and
corner roundels,
the center
of
the covers
showing
Abraham
and
Isaac ascending
the mountain to offer sacrifice; edges with gilt rolls. Spine with raised bands,
gilt-stamped title, and compartments otherwise elaborately gilt within. All
edges gilt.
Hills 1671. Binding as above, a bit rubbed. Light to moderate
foxing with offsetting from plates. Endpapers moderately soiled. Main frontispiece,
engraved title, and title-leaf detached from binding. Occasional shallow tears
or shallowly bumped page edges.
Simply,
a magnificent production.
