Ninth edition of this popular rendition of Aesop’s fables, each fable
being illustrated with its own oval-shaped, rectangular-framed engraving and
provided with a moral analysis by the translator; the index gives a list of
qualities with their applicable fables. Croxall’s translation was first
printed in 1722, with the most successful English version prior to that having
been the work of L’Estrange, whose reflections and interpretations Croxall
derides in his preface here.
• ESTC T84698. Quarter goat with marbled paper–covered sides, old-style, spine with gilt-ruled raised bands, gilt devices in compartments, and a gilt-stamped leather title label. Frontispiece mounted as can be seen in picture above, left; half-title lacking. Title-page recto and verso with early inked ownership inscriptions, one dated 1777. Mild spotting, with first and last few leaves showing somewhat more staining; stray pencil marks to one page. A nice copy.
