In this charming bibliophilic version of the fairy tale, Jack climbs the beanstalk in order
to learn all about books! He starts out helping to make paper, then observes the type foundry and
printing office at work, and ends by learning his letters and deciding to go to school every day. The
added story about Little Jane recounts her day-to-day adventures visiting a wild animal show, a sewing
circle, a pretty garden, etc. Both tales are illustrated with full-page and in-text wood engravings.
Provenance: The
decorative dedication leaf has been inscribed, in pencil: “William Warner
from his dear Father.”
Binding:
Publisher's green ribbed cloth–covered limp boards, front cover with gilt-stamped
title and date inside a gilt-stamped foliate medallion crowned with two young
boys reading a book. (The appearance of the publication date within the lower
lobe of this cover medallion is a bit unusual for a volume not an “annual.”)
Scarce: This
edition not found in OCLC.
Not in American Imprints.
Bound as above, hinges (inside) cracked and endpapers showing offsetting; edges
and extremities rubbed, spine sunned. Front pastedown and free endpaper with early inked
inscriptions from the aforementioned William. Light foxing only. (25270)
