Baskerville editions,
following the first Baskerville printings of 1758, with an added frontispiece
portrait of Milton engraved by G. Vertue bound in; this edition was issued
without a portrait. 
Inked
in an early hand on the back fly-leaf of the second volume are the prices paid
for the sheets from Baskerville and for the binding from Robiquet.
Full
tan calf, covers framed in elaborately interworked gilt rolls of birds, insects,
and foliate patterns.
Provenance: A fly-leaf with gift inscription in Latin from “Roberto Somervell” to his Harrow School friend “Arturus F. Hort”; title-pages with inked ownership inscription of John Hort.
• Gaskell, Baskerville, 9 &10; ESTC T134228 & N11290. Binding as above, rebacked some time ago, with gilt-stamped leather title and label labels, double gilt-ruled raised bands, and gilt-stamped decorations in compartments; joints and raised bands rubbed, with minor soiling to the covers. Front fly-leaf of vol. II separated; last few leaves of both volumes with slight foxing, pages otherwise clean.
