(Spanish Villancicos). Marvelous collection of 17 Spanish villancicos. Cádiz, Seville, Madrid, and Córdova, 1651–1731. All are 4to in format, most either 4 or 6 leaves in length.
Christmas.
Many famous writers such as Sor Juan Inés de la Cruz and Lope de Vega
composed and published in the form; yet as originally published, villancicos tend
now to be rare, having been thought of in their day as songs and song sheets
for one specific time during one specific year—new villancicos to
be prepared for next special occasion or the next year. They were ephemera,
if you will.
And, although written for and performed in churches
and cathedrals, often set to music by choirmasters, they are viewed as an essentially
secular development—a
vernacular marriage of folk music and popular literature.
The collection detailed below contains several pieces by well-known villancico composers,
one by the obscure but important Felix Persio Bertiso, and many by “anonymous.” Sixteen
items are not recorded in Palau and only three are traced via the International
Inventory of Villancico Texts database of 13,757 villancicos.
Thirteen
of the villancicos have woodcuts
on the title-pages and/or elsewhere: 9 are vignettes of the nativity, one is
a cut of St. James in battle, one is of the Virgin
and Child, and two are coats of arms.
