Stacey. The toilet. London: Rock Brothers & Payne, [ca.
1840?].
12mo (11.5 cm, 4.5"). [20] ff.: chromolithographic title-page, verso blank, "contents
of The Toilet," verso blank, [9] leaves of plates alternating with [9] leaves

Otherwise known as The Lady’s Toilet (e.g., binder’s title on front cover), this book provides emblematic moral instruction on true beauty — for instance, the best rouge is “Modesty,” and the best wrinkle-smoother “Contentment.” The fine chromolithographic illustrations, done by noted miniature portrait painter William Grimaldi, reveal their captions’ true meanings beneath moveable flaps of wonderfully various design; each depicted virtue is described on the subsequent leaf of text in verse by the illustrator’s son, Stacey Grimaldi. This is a later printing, following the first edition of 1821.
Publisher’s sheep in imitation of morocco, covers blind-stamped, and front cover with gilt-stamped title within decorative cartouche; spine and edges rubbed, binding slightly sprung. All edges gilt. Owner’s inscription, dated 1852, inked on front free endpaper. Pages pleasingly clean, with colors bright; all flaps original and present.
