title-page; the lithography was done by
Philadelphian
artist Thomas Sinclair, “using nine different stones on the elaborately
detailed title page” as described by Reese. The text includes poetic quotations
from numerous sources beyond the Bible, including Mary Townsend, Edgar Allan
Poe (for the chapter on the raven, of course!), and even
Aesop.
• Reese, Stamped with a National Character, 58. Binding as above, cloth worn over corners and spine extremities, a few small smudges and rubbed spots to gilt but still a bright, handsome binding. Front free endpaper with pencilled gift inscription dated “Christmas 1855.” Minor offsetting opposite some plates.Binding: Publisher’s red cloth in imitation of morocco, covers and spine gilt extra with floral and avian motifs.
